Unlike indoor Volleyball competitions, which are played weekly, the SABVS is played on one full day every 1-2 weekends throughout the summer over 10-12 Rounds, including a Championship/Final. SABVS enables you to pick and choose which dates and events you would like to nominate for. You do not have to commit to a full season; you can change your partner for every event.
There are two options to play in the SA Beach Volleyball Series. Players can nominate in Pairs for any ''Challenger'' or ''Elite8'' events and in Threes for ''Futures''.
- Elite8 & Challenger either Sundays or Saturdays unless stated otherwise, matches commence at 8am with the Grand Finals scheduled for 5pm.
- Futures either Saturdays or Sundays unless stated otherwise, matches commencing at either 8am-12.30pm, or 1pm-5.30pm
Every Player will receive individual SABVS / VA ranking points for every event they play (except Futures). The principle is that the more you play and the more matches you win, the more points you earn and the higher your ranking and seeding for the following events. Please find an overview of the distribution of ranking points HERE.
Your combined individual ranking points will determine your team's Seeding and the grade (3/2/1/0 Star) in which you will be playing in (Elite - Challenger).
Example: If you are a new team and both Players have not played before (no SABVS ranking points), you will start in the lowest grade available, unless you apply for a WildCard.
Excemption: If you win a grade in a round, you can play the next grade up in a subsequent round.
Elite8 / Challenger and Futures offer different divisions or age groups:
Elite8 & Challenger | Futures Threes / Fours |
Elite8 3 star = Performance |
Under 15, 3aside = Competitive / Beginners |
Challenger 3 star = Performance Challenger 2 star = Competitive |
Under 14, 4aside = Competitive / Beginners |
Challenger 1 star = Intermediate / Beginners | |
Challenger 0 star / Local = Beginners |
The SABVS Formats
Below is a guide to the SABVS grades and the most common draw formats. The draws can vary and will depend on the total number of nominations and court availability. Every team gets to play at least three matches and will have refereeing duties (the top Referee of each team must have a VA Level1 accreditation).
