Performance Our People CompetitiveVolleyball South Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Nathan Roberts as Head Coach of the Peligra Adelaide Storm Women's Team and Derek Slater as Head Coach of the Pelligra Adelaide Storm Men's Team ahead of the 2026 Mahindra AVSL season.
Derek Slater to Lead Storm Men
Derek Slater steps into the role with clear intent and strong belief in the group. When asked how it feels to take on the position, he said, "Focussed".
Slater’s coaching philosophy centres on understanding both the playing and coaching group to ensure everyone operates at their optimal level. He encourages players to be aggressive, take the game on, enjoy the contest and leave a legacy for those who follow.
As preparations begin for the new season, Slater has made expectations clear. The focus will be on building a team committed to pushing each other to perform. Supporters can expect a side that plays with natural flair while executing strong team structures and tactics. With AVSL demanding an aggressive brand of volleyball, the Storm men will bring energy, intensity and intent every time they step on court.
Slater, 50, known as Des, previously served as Head Coach of Storm from 2022 to 2024 and was Assistant Coach in 2025. His experience positions him strongly to lead the next chapter.
Nathan Roberts Appointed Storm Women Head Coach
Nathan Roberts takes the reins of the Storm Women’s team with genuine enthusiasm. In one word, he describes the opportunity as exciting.
Roberts’ coaching philosophy is built around equipping athletes with the tools to adapt to any scenario. Through purposeful training, he aims to challenge players to continually improve both individually and collectively. His focus is on development, resilience and empowering athletes to take ownership of their performance.
Looking ahead to the season, Roberts acknowledges the strong foundation already in place. The Storm women have achieved significant success in recent years, falling just short of the ultimate prize. This season, the group will continue to build on that progress and leave no stone unturned in pursuit of the AVSL crown.
Roberts, 39, known as Frank, represented Storm as a player from 2022 to 2024 and served as Women’s Assistant Coach from 2024 to 2025.
With both teams under experienced leadership, the Pelligra Adelaide Storm teams enter the new AVSL season ready to compete with purpose, passion and belief.
