Volleyball SA Algal Bloom Update
17 September 2025
Our People CompetitiveVolleyball SA would like to reinforce the current South Australian Government's recommendation that it is safe to enjoy our beaches and coastal areas, including for sporting and recreational activities.
The following precautions are advised for the beach volleyball community when participating:
- If you find seaweed on or near a volleyball court, carefully rake and clear the area before play.
- Always wash your hands and exposed skin with fresh water.
- Avoid touching algal bloom foam.
- Avoid swimming in foamy or discoloured water.
- People with Asthma are advised to carry their reliver medication and ensure their asthma management plan is up-to-date
When the algae are broken up by wave action, algal particles can cause short-term irritation. If you experience symptoms such as:
- Skin or eye irritation
- Coughing, sneezing, or throat irritation
Take a break from playing and move away from the area. Then:
- Rinse exposed skin, eyes, and clothing with fresh, clean water
- Avoid further contact with seaweed or foam
- Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen
- For health support, contact your GP or call HealthDirect on 1800 022 222
At this time there is no need to cancel or postpone any Volleyball South Australia events, competitions, or training sessions.
Volleyball SA will continue to monitor the situation and follow the latest official advice from SA Health and the Department for Environment and Water. By staying informed and following the current recommendations, we can continue to play, train on the South Australian coastline.
