An Unstoppable Force: Austral League Women's Perfect Season in the Making

23 May 2024

SAVL Performance Our People Competitive

The unstoppable force that is Austral Phoenix's League Women have had a season marked by nothing but exceptional performances every round.

The team's success is a testament to the many years of hard work taken to build up the team, and the addition of Head Coach Kirsty Bonner.

Kirsty is no stranger to volleyball, having played all through her junior years, at the top with the Australian U21 National Team, and overseas in the Dutch League before retiring at 28 years old.

Kirsty found her way back to volleyball at 48 playing with Austral's Reserve Women. Now at 51, she is prioritising healing her knee injury and contributing to the sport she loves so much in another way,

"When the club were looking for a League women’s coach I was approached by Harrison (president) to consider it. With the full support of the club, committee and girls, I decided to say yes and work on supporting them to enjoy the season."

When asked about the team's recent success, Kirsty mentioned a few factors were at play,

"We’ve been really lucky to have Lauren Heading join us this season ... She’s been a great confidence boost to the team and brings tremendous experience."

"I’d like to think clear communication, clarity in our roles, and tremendous trust amongst the players has really helped them believe. They have worked hard, worked together and will continue to give it everything they have for the rest of the season."

The team have done incredibly well in capitalising on their strengths this season,

"The overall height, depth of playing experience amongst the senior players and the mental strength they’ve shown has resulted in some very strong results" Kirsty highlighted.

Amongst the senior players is experienced Libero Torz Mensforth, who, in her second year with Austral Phoenix, iterates Kirsty's perspective on the team's success,

"We’ve had some great player pickups and transfers... which has helped bring some depth to the league squad. We have a very versatile team, with many of us being able to play multiple positions."

From the outside, it's clear the team has gelled well both on and off the court,

"The highlight of the season is how much fun we are having. The on-court and off-court vibes are immaculate" Torz shares.

As the season progresses, the pressure of maintaining an undefeated record builds.

“The pressure is definitely building leading into the second half of the season without a loss on the board” admitted Torz.

A challenge awaits in June, with three upcoming matches against USC Lion, the second-place team.

“We haven’t seen USC yet who are sitting second, so I believe after June when we see them three times, the scoreboard may look a little different, but we will continue to work hard, try our best and fight right until the end."

Coach Kirsty is feeling much the same, mentioning the team's excitement and joy in playing,

"...For the club, it’s fantastic to see the belief in the team. Every season is likely to have its challenges and we will too, but we are here to give it a red hot go! I'm so proud of the girls and just feel privileged to be able to be a part of it."

As the SA volleyball community eagerly anticipate the upcoming clashes, one thing is clear: Austral Phoenix League Women have already made an incredible mark on the season, showcasing the power of teamwork, strategic planning, and an unwavering spirit.
