SA Volleyball League - Referee/Official Treatment
22 April 2024
SAVL Our PeopleDear League Volleyball Members,
Unfortunately, recent SA Volleyball League matches (League division) events have prompted Volleyball SA to address a pressing issue within our sport. Over the past two weeks, we have received an increasing and consistent number of concerns regarding on-court behaviour from athletes and coaches directed towards referees and officials.
We are also disappointed to hear that our experienced athletes and coaches are displaying disrespectful behaviour towards our referees and officials. They are expected to set a positive example for volleyball in our state.
Referees play an integral role in volleyball, and their role should be met with respect and appreciation.
It is no surprise that SA is facing a shortage of referees and officials sport-wide, and it is disappointing to see this behaviour now coming from a sport like volleyball, which is seen as inclusive and enjoyable. The intimidating and disrespectful behaviour referees face hinders their development and ultimately threatens the quality and quantity of officials in our sport.
Internally, we are working hard to establish a pathway for our referees and officials. This will take time. However, the mistreatment they’re experiencing is causing our up-and-coming officials to reconsider their involvement.
Volleyball SA is asking our League members to support and empower our referees. We must provide a space where everyone feels valued and supported in our sport.
I ask you all to reflect on your on-court behaviour and consider its impact on our referees and officials and the integrity of our sport—the sport you love.
