Volunteer of the Year
17 July 2023
Our PeopleVolleyball SA is calling on the vibrant community of volleyball enthusiasts to come forward and nominate outstanding individuals for the prestigious Hartshorne Award - Volunteer of the Year.
This esteemed accolade, renamed in 2016 in honour of the beloved Jack and Connie Hartshorne, recognizes a key volunteer who exemplifies the values and ideals embodied by these remarkable figures.
Jack and Connie Hartshorne left an indelible mark on South Australian volleyball, dedicating countless years to the sport they loved. Whenever volleyball events took place, their presence was felt, as they tirelessly managed arenas for State League matches, Country championships, National League volleyball, and various National and International events held in Adelaide. Their names were spoken in unison, as they were inseparable, always seen together, and eternally synonymous with the sport.
Their commitment to the volleyball community extended far beyond the court. Jack and Connie embraced every member of the volleyball family as their own, nurturing relationships and building deep connections. They possessed incredible knowledge of players, celebrating birthdays, engagements, weddings, and the birth of children. Their acts of kindness were heartwarming, as children born into the volleyball family received thoughtful gifts like books or dolls, with the cherished "Connie doll" becoming a symbol of their affection. Jack and Connie were not just stalwarts of the sport but also South Australia's loving grandparents.
In commemoration of Jack and Connie's immense contributions, the Hartshorne Award seeks to recognize volunteers who go the extra mile within the SA Volleyball community. Nominees could be those who have facilitated the establishment and operation of social competitions, paved the way for juniors to embark on their volleyball journey, initiated innovative revenue streams for volleyball clubs or communities, and immersed themselves in developing the next generation of volleyballers. They may also be individuals who have formulated long-term visions for volleyball clubs or communities, worked towards making volleyball accessible and inclusive, or contributed to the all-around growth of the volleyball community both on and off the court.
The Hartshorne Award is a chance to acknowledge and honour those remarkable individuals who embody the spirit and legacy of Jack and Connie. By nominating a standout volunteer, you have the power to recognize their unwavering dedication, selflessness, and extraordinary contributions to the SA Volleyball community.
