Beach Volleyball in Bonython Park
19 December 2022
Our PeopleAfter the closure of the much-loved Adelaide City Beach venue in April 2022, Volleyball South Australia have been working hard behind the scenes to create a new multi-use, sports and activity hub at Bonython Park/Tulya Wardli.
The Adelaide City Beach venue was opened in 2001 with the expected lifespan to be only 5 years - 22 years later and much success, including full capacity competition from Monday - Thursday evenings, the location was sold to tech-giant NextDC Limited.
Adelaide City Council’s desire is that a beach volleyball facility remain within the City of Adelaide to serve a broad cross section of the community for social, sport and recreational purposes. Council has approved the repurposing of a section of the former netball courts (now being used as an informal carpark) in Bonython Park/Tulya Wardli (Park 27) for a new beach volleyball facility as part of a proposed activity hub.
Volleyball South Australia have worked closely with Outerspace Landscape Architects, the City of Adelaide and the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing on a Masterplan and Business Case for the site. The proposed venue plans to host 6 full-sized beach volleyball courts which are easily able to turn into other activities and sports with a key focus on flexibility and inclusivity. The masterplan also includes parking, a cafe, mezzanine bar, changeroom and toilet facilities.
Turning this area into an open, inclusive space will enable the us to capture the beautiful natural habitat of the Parklands and provide a safe area for the community to activate.
Volleyball South Australia have now completed all pre-work, including a detailed masterplan and cost estimate. The cost of the site is currently sitting at around $6-$7million however we are doing what we can to keep costs down while not compromising health and safety, environmental sustainability and security.
We continue to work with the City of Adelaide and Office of Recreation Sport and Racing on this project and hope to have some good news to share with our community soon.
