Nippy’s announced a breakthrough in packaging innovation by introducing the first paper straws for packaged drinks in Australia.
The new packs will be rolled out throughout the latter part of 2020. This initiative will make Nippy’s the first food and beverage company in Australia to introduce paper straws for packaged drinks to replace plastic straws. This is in line with the government’s target to reduce plastic waste by 70% in 2025.
“As a pilot initiative, the first Nippy’s No Added Sugar/Lactose Free 250ml Chocolate and Strawberry variants with paper straws will be available throughout Australia and New Zealand, said Mr. Frank Morena – Sales, Marketing & Distribution Manager” We are planning to roll out this packaging solution for other ready-to-drink products in phases progressively with the ultimate objective of eliminating plastic straws by full roll-out.
Whilst Nippy’s does not make straws, some of its portion-sized packs are designed to be used with a straw for on-the-go convenience. It has therefore been working with a manufacturing partner to create an ‘innovative and exclusive’ solution that it says makes the paper straw strong enough to pierce the closed hole of aseptic cartons. In addition, the straw wrapper has been redesigned to help prevent littering, by remaining attached to the pack for recycling along with the rest of the carton.
Nippy’s says the new straws are made from paperboard from FSC-certified forests or other controlled sources, supporting its efforts to use more renewable materials.
The straws are Biodegradable, recyclable and suitable for industrial and home composting.
