1) SA Athletes wanted in Centre of Excellence, Canberra

Volleyball SA would like to congratulate the following athletes for recently being offered (and accepting) a position in the CoE over in Canberra.

- Tara Maland
- Amelia Nitschke
- Matthew Drown

Tara was introduced to Volleyball by Brighton Secondary School, where she has won a number of School Cup events under Sue Rodger and colleagues, and became the Special Interest Volleyball (SIV) Captain for 2017. Tara is two time premiership league player for the Norwood Bears, and had her first state appearance in U16 with coach Shelley Clarke. Tara played both Beach and Indoor Volleyball for South Australia throughout her junior years, participated in several tours for the Australian Junior program with coach Nam Pham and was selected into the Commonwealth Games Youth Beach Volleyball Squad. During her development she trained in the VSA Academy Tier 3 and was a SASI associate scholarship holder with coaches Edwina McCarron and Michael Nelson for 4 years. Congratulations to Tara for obtaining a CoE scholarship. The South Australian volleyball community wish her the very best!

Amelia played State League Volleyball for Adelaide University (AUVC) and AVL for the Adelaide Storm Women's team in 2017. Through her hard work and determination, she has obtained a position at the CoE in Canberra. Adelaide Storm Head Coach, Jason Potts, would like to wish Amelia all the best in Canberra and hopes she comes back to represent the Storm in the future.

Matthew started playing volleyball in Primary School with Marryatville Primary School in year 4 and was identified through the SASI talent search program in 2015. He trained in the VSA Academy (Tier 3) program for 3 years and has represented his School (Pembroke College), Club (Norwood), State (SA) and been a part of the Junior Oz program to name a few. Coach Edwina McCarron stated that Matthew was always keen to perfect his game and is a strong competitor.

2) Urban Beach Season 1

Volleyball SA was thrilled to be able to promote the game we love to a wider audience in partnership with Renewal SA through Urban Beach

Thousands of people visiting Urban Beach through Summer watched or played volleyball every day and by the most popular sports item hired through the Beach Kiosk was a volleyball. Lots of families also appreciated the numerous school holiday clinics held through December and January and the Adelaide University Volleyball Club enjoyed their club launch there as well!

With the Adelaide City Council currently only extending Adelaide City Beach’s lease until 30 June this year, after 18 years of providing social volleyball and fitness,  Urban Beach showed conclusively that Adelaide still wants beach volleyball in the city and a place for families to be active! Let’s hope that Volleyball SA is supported in its efforts to deliver on what the people want and we are able to provide a permanent Beach Volleyball centre in the city for years to come!

3) Spikezone Mini Volleyball

Spikezone Mini Volleyball is back for 2018! Get your nominations in NOW for our Term 1 competitions including Brighton, City Beach, Westbourne Park, Campbelltown, Henley plus more!

Spikezone is a modified version of the game aimed at both boys and girls in Years 4-7 (8-13 years old).
