VA and VSA recognise that quality coaching has a significant influence on players and their volleyball experiance. It is an exciting times for Volleyball and in particular coaches for Volleyball Australia has recently updated its Coach Accreditation Framework. The new Coaching Pathway is as follows:

FOUNDATION COACH (New Online Module)- Click here for more information

TALENT DEVELOPMENT COACH (Level 2)- replaces Level 1. Click here for information on upcoming course

ELITE COACH (Level 3) - replaces Level 2

MASTER COACH (Level 4)  - replaces Level 3


Foundation Course (New Level 1)

The new coaching framework has seen a new introductory course implemented. This course is delivered through Volleyball Australia's online learning platform and as such is more accessible to entry-level beginner coaches.

Target Audience: Spikezone, junior club, primary and seconday school teachers, PE teachers and parents

Prerequisites: Before starting your Level 1 Foundation Coach online course you will need to have:

  • completed the two free Play byThe Rules courses “Child Protection” and “Harassment and Discrimination” free online courses found at
  • Have a current DCSI Child Related Employment Screening check (valid 3 years from issue) OR be a currently registered teacher. If you require a DCSI screening, fill out this form to start the process.

Duration: 4 hours in online course work

Cost: $44

Whats next?

 You will need to pay for the online course via our Tickets and Nominations page and your payment will be verified within 5 business days. Volleyball SA will contact you and ask for you to send proof of meeting the prerequisites. Once all prerequisites have been sighted you will be sent a link to register for the online course which will grant you instant access to the course. Upon completion of the online course you will be automatically sent your accreditation


Talent Development Coach (New Level 2)

The new coaching framework "Talent Development Coach" replaces the old level 1 course. This course is delivered through a    1-day face-to-face course.

Target Audience: State League Clubs, Associations, State Team Assistant Coaches, State and National Schools Cup Coaches.


  • Complete the free online course "Community Coaching General Principles" run by Australian Sports Commission.
  • Complete the "Play by the Rules" modules "Child Protection" and "Harrassment and Discimination"

Course Duration: 1-day (9hrs) course

After Course Work:

After completing the course, participants will be required to doa practical component by completing either:

  • Assessed as competentin 2 training sessions and 2 coaching sessions by a recognised mentor


  • A total of 40 hours coaching practice post-course. Of these 40 hours, 12 hours must be supervised by a recognised mentor who will provide feedback to the candidate on their performance.

Volleyball SA will be holding Coaching Courses each year. A number of Level 2 (Talent Development) courses will be scheduled each year and Level 3 (Elite) courses will be arranged as participant numbers and presenter availability allow.

Level 2 (Talent Development) Courses generally run 8.30am - 6.30pm on either a Saturday or Sunday and are NCAS accredited.

Elite Coach (Level 3) 

Level 3 (Elite) Courses generally will run over 3-4 days and may be scheduled over two weekends or concurrently. More info on Level 3 (Elite) Course click here.

  • Australian Sports Commission (online coaching course) named "Community Coaching General Principles"

Community Coaching General Principles is a free online coaching course and is a prerequisite for the Level 2 Coaching Course. The course has 4 modules and can be completed in approximately 4 hours. The course can be completed one module at a time and you can enter the learning portal as many times as you need to complete the course. When you have completed Community Coaching General Principles, you will be sent a certificate.

  • Play by the Rules (online courses) "Harassment and Discrimination" and "Child Protection"

Play by the rules provides free online training for everyone involved in sport and recreation organisations, including: coaches, administrators, officials, players, parents and spectators.By taking these courses you will upgrade your knowledge and skills, which will help to create safer, fairer and more inclusive environments for all people involved in sport.

The Level 2 (Talent Development) Coaching Course must have a minimum of 10 participants to run the course.
